Teaching kids about computers can prepare them for using the numerous forms of technology that are present throughout today's society. In addition to providing entertainment to kids, computers can also be used as a resource for completing tasks such as homework assignments or research papers.

Just as with any individual who is new to computers, you should start with teaching kids some computer basics; such as using a mouse and keyboard, and about general computer etiquette. As your children learn how the computer works, you can advance their knowledge to the mechanics beneath the surface and even begin introducing them to the computer code used to create software programs.
  • Teach children that are at least 3 years old and above. Children aged 3 and older are more likely to absorb and understand basic computer concepts; whereas children younger than 3 may struggle with learning about computers, especially since they are still developing their visual, language, and speaking skills.
  • Install applications on the computers that are made for children use. In order for children to learn about computers efficiently, computers should be outfitted with mouse and keyboards that children can physically use and understand better.
  • Teaching the basics of the computer.  Many websites offer interactive lessons for teaching children keyboard skills and how to use word processing programs. Spending time with your children using these programs or showing them the program you use and why you use them enhances their understanding of what the computer is used for beyond games. When it comes time to upgrade your computer software or hardware or open the case to clean out the fan, invite your children to watch while you explain what you are doing and why.
  • Teach children on how to use the internet for researching of homework assignments. The Internet can be a resourceful tool in completing homework assignments, and can be an ideal way for kids to strengthen their computer skills.
  • Advanced Computer Skills. After your children are comfortable using a keyboard and mouse, they are ready to learn some advanced computer skills. Consider setting your children up with their own email accounts. You can send those emails from work and use email to ask them what they want for dinner or to discuss plans for the weekend. Some free games can give children an understanding of the graphics behind the computer games they play.  It will also be a great avenue for them to enhance their technology skills.
  • Be sure to discuss the online safety. Establish clear rules for using the Internet and discuss them with your children. For example, you may want your children not to communicate with anyone without your presence. For older children, you could establish rules about communicating only with people they know in person, such as friends from school and relatives. If your children play online games, discuss the importance of anonymity and not sharing their real names or personal information like the city they live in with anyone they don't know.
